A peaceful Cloister of Dubrovnik Franciscan Monastery

The Franciscan Monastery in Dubrovnik isn’t just a church – it’s in fact a whole complex that includes the Church itself, a peaceful Cloister, the historic Old Pharmacy, and a fascinating Museum!

Dubrovnik’s Franciscan Monastery consists of several parts

Dubrovnik’s Franciscan Monastery has a long history! In fact, a document from way back in 1235 mentions the very first monastery, called Saint Thomas, located outside the city walls. Things changed in 1317 when the threat of war loomed. The original monastery was torn down, and a new one was built safely inside the city walls.

Speaking of the monastery itself, it’s a grand sight! There are two beautiful courtyards, called cloisters. The upper one is decorated in the Renaissance style, with arches and rounded ceilings. The lower cloister is a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles. Imagine a peaceful courtyard surrounded by arched walkways with double columns. These columns have carvings of plants, animals, and geometric shapes.

While at Francisan Monastery, don’t miss the “pietà” sculpture above the door. A historical treasure carved in 1498.

The lower cloister is especially interesting because it was built in the early 1300s by architect Mihoje Brajkov of Bar. It has a whopping 120 columns and 12 even bigger pillars! Moreover, in the center of the cloister, you’ll find a refreshing fountain and a statue of Saint Francis.

The monastery also has a fascinating museum. One part of the museum is the well-preserved Old Pharmacy, which has been operating since 1317! You’ll see furniture from Italy dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, along with old tools like mortars and scales. They even have a special still from the 1300s used for making medicines!

The museum has other treasures too, including ancient manuscripts, religious music books, and paintings by forgotten artists. The library boasts copies of medieval manuscripts and some truly valuable jewelry. There’s even a head relic of Saint Ursula from the 1300s!

Your Simple Guide to Reaching Franciscan Monastery

Heading to Franciscan Monastery? Great choice! This peaceful oasis, known for its stunning architecture and ancient pharmacy, lies conveniently within Dubrovnik’s Old Town. So, here’s what you need to know to make your visit smooth and enjoyable.

Step 1: Head to Dubrovnik’s Old Town

The Franciscan Monastery is inside Dubrovnik’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Whether you’re staying in Dubrovnik or coming from outside the city, your first goal is to reach the Old Town. If you’re in the city, a short walk or a local bus ride (look for buses heading to Pile Gate) will get you there. For visitors coming from further away, consider using city buses, taxis, or even a pleasant walk if you’re up for it.

Step 2: Find Your Way to Pile Gate

Pile Gate is the main entrance to Dubrovnik’s Old Town and serves as a great starting point for your visit to the Franciscan Monastery. Once you’re at Pile Gate, you’re just a few steps away from the monastery. The Old Town is pedestrian-only, so enjoy the car-free streets as you move on to the next step.

Step 3: Enter the Old Town and Take a Left

As soon as you walk through Pile Gate, take a left. The Franciscan Monastery is conveniently located just off the main street, Stradun, which is the Old Town’s broadest and most bustling street. You won’t miss the large and inviting entrance to the monastery on your left-hand side as you walk. It’s close to the entrance, so you won’t need to walk far.

Friendly Tips:

Kaartjes

Before you can step into Franciscan Monastery, you’ll need a ticket. You can buy these tickets at the ticket office located within the monastery itself. It is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Now, if you’re savvy and have the Dubrovnik-pas, je hebt geluk! Met deze pas kun je rechtstreeks de muren op, zonder dat je een apart kaartje hoeft te kopen. Het bespaart u veel tijd en maakt het verkennen van de stad een fluitje van een cent.
