Revelin Fort – A Journey Through Time

Built in the 16th century, Revelin Fortress wasn’t just part of the Ploče Gate entrance to Dubrovnik’s Old Town. It was the city’s eastern shield, protecting against threats and guarding the Old Port.

Back in the day, the Ottoman Empire posed a threat, so they built Revelin as an extra guard for the eastern city gate. The name even comes from “ravelin,” meaning a fort built to strengthen weak spots. At first, Revelin was just a pile of dirt. But when another danger loomed (this time from Venice!), they knew they needed something tougher. Enter Antonio Ferramolino, a master fortress builder, who designed a much stronger Revelin.

For 11 whole years, everything else in Dubrovnik stopped while they built this amazing fortress! In fact, they were serious about keeping their city safe. By 1549, the new Revelin was the strongest fort around, protecting the city from attacks by land.

Today, this historic landmark has three entrances and spacious interior, while multiple terraces offer stunning views of the Old Harbour and Lokrum Island.

But Revelin Fort isn’t just about the past! It’s now a vibrant hub for entertainment. It’s hosting the renowned Dubrovnik Summer Festival and a popular nightclub. In fact, its many terraces on different levels still hold the title of “largest in the city.”
