History of Fort Lovrjenac

The story of Fort Lovrjenac starts a long time ago, between the years 1018 and 1038. Making it in fact one of Dubrovnik’s oldest monuments. The first time someone wrote about this fort was in the year 1301, marking it as an important place even back then. Originally, the fort was built in a unique triangular shape and could only be reached by crossing a drawbridge. It stood about seven meters high with walls that had special walkways supported by strong arches.

As years passed, people made the Lovrjenac Fortress stronger and updated it. They dug a deeper moat around it in 1418 and added a new drawbridge. The fort’s walls grew taller, and they moved the main door to enhance safety.

In 1464, they made the fort even tougher by making the west and north walls twice as thick, up to 12 meters. A builder named Zanchi from Pesaro did some work to add protective barriers on top of the walls.

A cool detail is that the wall facing the city was only 0.6 meters thick on purpose. This was so the city could easily destroy the Lovrjenac Fortress with cannons from another fort, Bokar, if bad guys ever took it over or if there was a revolt inside. The city leaders chose a new guard for the fort every month to stop any trouble before it could start.

Inside, the fort was ready for battle with big cannons all around. The biggest cannon, called the Lizard, was made by a man named Ivan of Rab in 1537. Even though it was huge, it never actually shot at anyone.

Over the 16th and 17th centuries, they kept improving the fort until it looked like it does today. A big earthquake in 1667 damaged it a lot, so they had to fix it up until the end of the 17th century.

During World War II, the fort was used as a prison. They divided the inside into smaller cells. Right after the war, they fixed it up to look like it used to.

There’s an interesting story from the 1100s. The people from Venice wanted to build their own fort right where Lovrjenac is. But the people of Dubrovnik heard about it and quickly built the fort themselves in just three months. When the Venetians arrived with their building supplies, they saw the fort already standing and had to turn back. This story shows how smart and quick the people of Дубровник were to protect their city.
